Big Skies, Big Plans

Updated: Nov 26

For over 20 years my work has been all about delivering goals, getting things done and leading teams to make this possible. My personal life has, to some extent, mirrored this.

Along with our triumphs the teams I have been privileged to lead have also had our issues, our setbacks, our slippages, and our failures.

To deliver anything we need a plan, and we need people. But to do this with consistency while simultaneously ensuring we and our teams thrive there is more we need to consider.

Over the past few years, I have been gathering and collating all I have learned. Utilising this I have developed a process to help us deliver. I focus this on business but believe it works just as well for our personal endeavours.

I've been testing and refining the process with the Career Course students from the Tallulah Rose Flower School and clients from both EQLM Ltd and Crag and Crest Coaching. I have also tested it during my personal objectives. Throughout this time, I have been training and practicing as a coach both directly with clients and indirectly with the teams I lead, and this has helped with the questions around the emerging process.

I call the process “Big Skies, Big Plans”. This process takes us from our “why”, though our “where” then through “what/how/who” and to “when”. This is to build a robust plan with all the appropriate foundations in place. We then consider what it takes to manage and deliver that plan until finally our vision is realised. We also consider when to change the plan.

Like everyone else I've experienced a difficult few years. This because of Covid and lockdowns but I also lost both parents with little or no prior indication of issues or warning during this period. This raised, or forced me to confront, uncomfortable truths about my past, my childhood and significantly heightened my sense of mortality.

As a result, it is time for me to make a change: to practice my own process, follow my own values, and walk my own talk both personally and professionally.

“We have two lives, and the second begins when we realise we only have one.” Confucius.

I want to help others make similar changes and to do this I am going to share the process I have developed and where appropriate I’ll assist people in following this process. Together we will also amend and develop the process. My objective is to help people or businesses “Realise their vision”.

This process is not a holy grail nor definitive. It is not perfect, and you may find elements you disagree with. In fact, I welcome your challenges. The process is evolving as I continually use, test, refine, and improve it. It is also aligned with my personal values, which may not resonate with everyone. If that’s the case, this might not be for you.

To give you a feel for my experiences and therefore the input into the process here is a selection of highlights from my life and my work:

·       At the age of 13 I camped for a week, self-supported

·       At 14 I walked the Pennine way with full pack

·       At 18 I failed all my A levels

·       At 22, with a degree in hand, no job, and nowhere to live I moved to the capital

·       At 24 I moved into IT and subsequently managed deliveries for large enterprises

·       I led the development of one of the first click and collect services in the UK

·       I led one of the first Radio frequency ID trials in the UK

·       I led the first transactional site for a global high street retailer

·       I've recovered broken technical and transformational deliveries

·       I've worked in retail, telecoms, travel, and services and in both private and public sectors

·       I led the delivery of millions of pounds worth of projects and more in terms of benefits

·       I have 3 music albums to my name & several released/published musical co-writes

·       I have published weekly poetry for 6 years continuously

·       I have walked many of the hills in the UK

·       I’ve cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats

·       I cycled 262 miles in a day

·       I've run ultras up to 100km

·       I climb on rock and ice and continue to pursue and improve my ability

·       I’ve climbed 4 to 6 thousand metre peaks in Europe and further afield

·       I am a qualified Mountain Leader

·       I am the husband of the owner of Tallulah Rose Flower School

I have been privileged to meet, work, and play with some truly inspirational people throughout my journey who shaped both me and my path and I am eternally indebted to them.

I am now looking for people or businesses who are confronted with the challenge of getting something done. Something you know you want to achieve but for various reasons are struggling to deliver. From seemingly small objectives to lofty ambitions, from CEOs to business leaders, from individuals to teams.

We will use the methodologies and practices of “Big Skies, Big Plans”. Where appropriate we will use the power of the outdoors to alter perspective, to motivate and to spark our creativity.

Together we will work to define your vision.

Together we will realise that vision.
